Oosthuizen set a championship record with his halfway total of 129 at Royal St. George’s and took a one-shot lead into the final round, 11 years to the day since he lifted the Claret Jug at St Andrews.

However, the 38-year-old South African could only card a closing one-over-par 71 to finish in a tie for third with Jon Rahm, having previously finished runner-up in both the US PGA and US Open this season.

Oosthuizen declined to speak to reporters after his final round on Sunday, after which he took the PGA Tour’s charter flight to Minnesota to contest this week’s 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities.
